Brighten up your home with this modern crochet Monstera wall hanging using the tapestry method

Hello! Firstly, this modern Monstera crochet wall hanging has been on the cards for a long time, so I am super excited to finally share it.

Beautiful Monsteras aka Cheeseplants are taking over … in real life, and in craft form. Recently, I’ve seen so many beautiful projects using them in all forms e.g. motifs on pillows, in tapestries, rugs and on embroidery. Despite this, I was really looking forward to making my own design for this new, free crochet pattern.

With Christmas past approaching, I’d been thinking of a present to give my cousin. She set up an African design and living company, selling beautiful home wares called Kuzi Trading, I knew it would have to be something plant related.

Not surprisingly, a popular item is the Monstera planter bag which is so gorgeous – and sold in a few different colours.

For that reason, I decided to use this print of the cheese plant as inspiration for my wall hanging to gift her.

Using the tapestry method in the modern Monstera crochet wall hanging

In brief, this project is made using the tapestry method – changing between 2 colours (beige and green) lots and lots of times. This results in keeping the colour changes neat and unnoticeable by working around the yarn not being used. Basically, you do not break off and re-attach yarn after each colour change.

Tip = use a much smaller hook for you project when working with the tapestry method. The beige and green version was made with a 2mm hook and this helps to hide gaps and makes the finished piece much neater. It measures approx. 15cm (6″) wide.

The grey and green version (seen at bottom of the page), uses a 4mm hook and measures 24cm (9.5″).

It’s probably best if you have some experience with this technique as above all, keeping the colour changes consistent and looking neat takes a bit of practice. To demonstrate, follow this tutorial from Yah For Yarn for the basics.

Most important, what I love about this is there’s no need to attach pieces … yah! The plant motif is worked into the project, so there’s no need to attach fiddly new yarn, or weave in ends after each colour change. So by crocheting around the colour that you are not using it will keep hidden – this is called ‘carrying your yarn’.

One warning though – with this method, try not to be too tight with your tension. It’s very tempting to pull your yarn tight when you start your new colour but you will notice it! Keep your tension consistent but firm and then you’ll have a lovely neat finished project.

Changing colours

Importantly, remember that on the stitch before you change colour, do not pull your yarn through the final loop. In fact, this is where you attach your new colour and then finish that last stitch with the new colour.

So in summary, this modern Monstera crochet wall hanging consists of one main piece, with X40 foundation chain and then X43 rows. It’s worked in HTR (UK TERMS) so builds up surprisingly quick.

INSTRUCTIONS: ***UK TERMS***

MATERIALS:

  • 2 or 4mm hook
  • 50g Beige Drops Yarn & 50g Green Drops Yarn (minimum)
  • Bamboo or stick
  • Needle to weave ends and attach the hanging to your stick

So, here is the pattern chart, to help you keep track of all the colour changes. To start, you will work from the bottom with a full row of beige then start swapping colours from row 2, working up the diagram.

Also, I’ve also written instructions for the modern Monstera crochet wall hanging below.

Fasten off and weave in the ends

Next, when you have finished your base of the all hanging, create a long chain (or iCord), as long as 20cm and attach it to the other side.

Lastly, attach the finished wall hanging to your bamboo or stick using a needle.

& TA-DAH! You have this gorgeously chic, modern Monstera crochet wall hanging ready to be displayed or given as a gift like I did.

It looks fabulous albeit a bit daunting at first. But, I assure you, following the tapestry technique is simple once you’ve mastered the basics.

Without a doubt, this has been a top-favourite project of mine and I undeniably would like to make one for myself … although maybe try extra colours to create shading next time.

So stay tuned to keep up with new patterns.

Happy crafting fellow crocheters.
