Who’s ready to snuggle up with this adorable crochet monkey comforter?

Making this crochet monkey comforter for my partner’s best friend was so much fun. Recently, they had a baby and I was so excited meet them. They live in the Czech Republic and as we were visiting over Christmas it was the perfect chance to keep my crocheting hands busy.

With so many different types of baby toys and gifts to make I was torn between a blanket or a toy. Instead, I thought, why not combine them both into an adorable comforter crochet blanket

There are plenty of gorgeous patterns, but I was keen to create something with a monkey face which I couldn’t find.

I tried to keep this as simple as possible with nice pleasing shapes and the minimum amount of parts. As this was for a new-born, safety is an absolute must so baby safe wool, stuffing and safety eyes need to be used.

The base of the blanket is made with a basic granny square which has lots of gaps to ensure there is no risk of suffocation. I alternated between blue and cream, 4 rows of each.

Then, the monkey’s head is worked in a continuous row of DC (UK terms) with blue. A beige oval shape is attached to the head to make the front of the face which includes 2 eye sections made with half-circular shapes. The mouth is sewn on to this section and the eyes are made by attaching safety eyes.

INSTRUCTIONS: *** UK TERMS ***

MATERIALS:

  • 2 skeins of King Cole baby double knitting 100% anti pilling acrylic; sky blue and cream
  • 3mm and 2.5mm hook (using the smaller hook for the face which is sewn onto the head)
  • Stuffing (machine wash safe)
  • Safety eyes
  • Needle to attach parts together so they are tight and secure
  • Extra thick black thread to sew the mouth

GRANNY SQUARE BASE = 3mm hook

NOTES: The 1 CHAIN to begin each row  is to build height, this is NOT counted. Each of the group of 3CHAINS will act as your corners. See diagram.

The eye socket sections are attached individually, (4th DC from the middle of the oval). They are created by starting from the middle and working the rows outward to form half circle shapes.

Start each row with 2 Chains, then HTC. At the end of each row you will need to Slip Stitch into the oval and then turn your work, working back over the HTCs just made.

Next, place safety eyes in the first set of HTC stitches, and sew a mouth around the bottom of the first row in the oval. Then sew the face onto the head. Attach ears and lastly, stuff the head then attach the completed head to the centre of the granny square blanket.

So, there you have it. A completed crochet monkey comforter that can provide endless cuddles and comfort.
